Piekarski Leads ACT Late Model Tour
Event at White Mountain Motorpsorts Park Piekarski started in the seventh position for his
qualifying heat and quickly moved through the pack, searching for a win.
He caught the leader when the checkers flew, but settled for a second
place finish. "The Collision Centers of New Hampshire/Toyota of
Nashua car was very good in that heat race," said Piekarski. "Another lap or two and I think we could have had a
win," continued Piekarski. The second place finish in the heat race was good
enough to grab the pole position for the 100-lap main event. When the
checkers flew, Piekarski used the preferred low groove on the track to
propel the #19 machine ahead of the pack. He held down the point for the
first twenty laps before current series point leader Dave Pembroke made a
pass for the lead. "I was trying to protect my line, but slid just a
bit and Dave jumped on the opportunity," said Piekarski of the pass by
Pembroke. Once Pembroke got underneath Piekarski, it was
difficult to get back down into the low groove and the car just would not
stick on the outside. Once back in line, Piekarski hovered around the
seventh position. A handful of cautions slowed the action and staged side
by side restarts with Piekarski picking up a position here and there in
the low groove. Unfortunately, one of the restarts put him on the outside
row for a restart around lap 80. He tried to get the car low as soon
possible as not to get shuffled back in the pack as happened early in the
event. But, as is the case sometimes, the openings look
bigger than they are and he made contact with a car which caused the left
rear tire to go down and the car spinning. The caution flew and the PBJ
Motorsports team quickly changed the tire and kept B.J. on the lead lap. "Things happen so fast out there. The whole closed
as quickly as it opened and it turned into one of those racing deals,"
expressed Piekarski of the incident. With a final race to the checkers, Piekarski was
able to muster a 12th place finish. "The car was great. Wayne Helliwell put a great
set-up under the car and the crew did a great job getting me back out
there after the flat tire. We had a car capable of winning today, but it
wasn’t meant to be," said Piekarski following the race. The finish does place Piekarski firmly in the top
ten in the championship points race. The 2004 Rookie of the Year currently
sits sixth in points entering the next event at the Canaan Fair Speedway
on Sunday, June 26th. For more information about the PBJ Motorsports team,
