Piekarski Comes Up Short (on His
Side) in ACT Tour Nutmeg State 100 at Waterford Because neither driver nor team had experience at
Waterford, the setup of the car was based on notes from tracks that were
similar in size and layout. After practice and the heat race, those notes
were set aside as the setup to not have under the car. "The car wasn’t handling well at all during the heat
race," said Piekarski. "We went out hoping that we could at least keep
with the pack, but we just didn’t have the right setup," continued
Piekarski. When the field rolled out on the track for the
100-lap main event, 25 cars took the initial green flag with Piekarski
starting deep in the 24th spot. Piekarski managed to work his
way through a bit of traffic moving up to the 17th position by
lap 15. Just a few laps later; the caution flew for a big wreck just ahead
of Piekarski. Catching some debris in the left rear tire caused B.J. to
bring the Toyota of Nashua/Collision Centers of New Hampshire late model
to the pit to replace the flat tire. On the ensuing restart, Piekarski was once again
faced with the challenge of starting in the back. On lap 40, Piekarski
went around and tagged the wall with some help from the #60 car of Dan
Colby. There was heavy cosmetic damage to the car from this incident, but
the PBJ Motorsports team persevered and made it back onto the track with
the Merchants Rent-A-Car machine now looking like a open-wheel modified. "When I went out after brushing the wall, the car
felt the best it had all day," said Piekarski. "It’s kind of ironic, but I
was able to come up through the pack in the outside groove while everyone
else was sticking to the bottom," expressed Piekarski. As the laps dwindle away, Piekarski had a car that
was now performing to his liking and he was following Jamie and Steve
Fisher to the front. As the trio approached the top ten frontrunners, the
Fisher brothers got together right in front of Piekarski. Piekarski tried
to go high to avoid the incident, but didn’t clear the mess in time.
Instead, Piekarski caught the wall and before he knew it, he was sliding
on the driver’s side of the car the entire length of the Speedbowl’s
backstretch. "It is something I have never done before in my
racing career, and its something I would rather not do again real soon,"
proclaimed the uninjured Piekarski.
The unfortunate incident brought a premature closure to the night for the PBJ Motorsports team. Officially, Piekarski finished 18th in the Nutmeg 100. Piekarski is currently 15th in the championship point standings, just 45 points out of the top ten. The team will have time to repair the damage to the car before the Central Paving 100 ACT Tour race at the Riverside Speedway in Groveton, NH on Saturday, July 10th. [ Previous Page ] |
