Late Race Spin Ends Hopes of a
Top 10 for Piekarski at WMMP ACT Race Each event, the competitors on the ACT Tour have to
draw for a starting position in the qualifying heat races. After drawing
the last starting position again, BJ Piekarksi took to the high-banked
quarter-mile and knew immediately that they had missed the set-up on the
car. "We had nothing for them in the heat race," said
Piekarski. "The car was handling very poorly and I knew we were going to
have to qualify through the consi." The PBJ Motorsports team went to work on the Toyota
of Nashua/Collision Centers of New Hampshire Late Model to make a number
of chassis adjustments before the consolation race. Their efforts paid off
with BJ bringing the car home sixth; good enough to start 21st
for the main event. "The team changed everything before the consi," said
Piekarski. "The car is loose, but it is fast." As the green flag flew on the pack to kick off the
100-lapper, Piekarski quickly picked off positions and was running 14th
by lap 10. Then the bad luck struck. "Two cars got together in front of me and I had
nowhere to go," said Piekarski. "Luckily, the incident just tore the hood
off and we were able to make it back out." The car was extremely loose as the field went back
to green flag racing. A couple of more cautions slowed the action on the
track, but it allowed the team to make a few more adjustments to tighten
the car up. On the ensuing restart, Piekarski noticed an
improvement to the Merchants Rent-A-Car machine. He went to work to regain
some of the positions lost from the earlier incident. Piekarski quickly
passed eight cars before entering a hard side-by-side battle with veteran
hot shoe Dale Shaw. The duo would put on a great show for almost 30 laps.
By halfway, Piekarski found himself back in the top 10. Piekarski maintained a running spot in the top ten
for several more laps, but the tires were starting to fade and the car was
again extremely loose. With 15 laps remaining, Piekarksi looked to make a
move for the eighth position when he broke traction and spun. This dropped
him back to 20th position. "I was able to pick up a couple of positions after
the spin," said Piekarski. "But, with just a few laps left in the race, we
ran out of time. We had a top ten car today. Even though we had to fight a
handling problem for much of the race, I am very happy with the direction
we are headed. I know we have some good finishes ahead of us," concluded
Piekarksi. The team has this weekend off before returning to
action at the Waterford Speedbowl in Connecticut on Saturday, June 19th
for the Nutmeg State 100. Stop by and visit the PBJ Motorsports team at the
Car Show at the Anheuser-Busch Merrimack (NH) Brewery on Sunday June 13th. [ Previous Page ] |
