Piekarski Knocked on a Top 10 Finish at Thunder Road
NASHUA, NH – Off the heels of a twelfth place finish at Twin State Speedway in Claremont, NH on Friday night, the PBJ Motorsports team quickly regrouped for part two of their doubleheader weekend. Returning to Barre, VT to the famed Thunder Road Speedbowl, the team was looking to improve on their last outing at T-Road in the season opener where driver B.J. Piekarksi posted a 24th place finish with mechanical problems.

With only 26 positions available for the 39th Memorial Day Classic, Piekarski was set to race his way into the main event. He started 9th in his heat race and managed to work his way to sixth place. The sixth place finish was not good enough to make the field so it was on to the consolation round. Piekarski’s starting position wasn’t any better, staring at ten cars ahead of him from 11th place.

"The car was good, but my draws for starting position have been terrible and there is only so much time to get to the front in these heat races," said Piekarski.

The consolation race produced another sixth place finish for the Toyota of Nashua/Collision Centers of NH #19. This was still not good enough to make it into ‘the show’. The ‘last chance’ race or B-Main feature was Piekarski’s last chance to make the Memorial Day Classic. In the twenty-lap B-Main, Piekarksi scored a third place finish and a guaranteed starting position in the Classic.

Starting 23rd of the 26-car field for the Classic looked to be a very steep obstacle considering the number of laps on the tires already. Trying to save tires for a late race run at the front of the pack, Piekarksi continued to show growth as a driver with tremendous patience. The PBJ Motorsports crew felt that it would be best to start their run just past the halfway point of the race.

The strategy paid off as Piekarksi cracked the top ten late in the race. But, the tires started to fade tremendously each lap and the Merchants Rent-A-Car machine dropped to 14th position. Piekarksi was able to hold this position until the last lap of the race. The leaders of Joe Becker and Mark Lamberton were racing hard for the win when contact was made. Lamberton got sideways across the track and the field scattered coming to the checkers. Piekarski took the low groove through the grass to avoid the incident and managed to pick up three spots at the wire.

"That was a wild finish but I am very happy with the 11th place finish after having a poor showing here in the season opener," said Piekarski.

With the solid finish, Piekarksi moves to 14th in overall championship points, just seven points out of the top 10. Once again, Piekarski was the top-finishing Rookie.

The PBJ Motorsports will move on to White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, NH this Saturday evening June 5th for the Granite State 100. This will be Piekarski’s first visit back to the high-banked quarter-mile since competing there in a Baby Grand Stockcar.
